Vitamin D is important for good health. It maintains normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body and promotes absorption of calcium, thus helping in bone growth and remodeling. Adequate Vitamin D intake helps prevent bone disorders such as rickets in kids and osteomalacia in adults, and also helps in reducing risk of osteoporosis and cancer.

200 IUs (international units) of vitamin D daily are enough for most individuals under 50, but older persons will need higher amounts of it. Vitamin D is naturally produced through exposure to ultraviolet rays in sunlight, though at a slower rate in individuals with darker skin. Vitamin D may also be obtained via diet supplements, natural food items that contain vitamin D such as fish liver oil, egg yolk, beef liver, cheese and fatty fish (Such as salmon and tuna) or foods such as breakfast cereals and milk fortified with vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency may be caused by little or no exposure to sunlight, lactose intolerance, milk allergy or a strictly vegetarian diet. Older individuals (Above 50 years of age) have a higher risk of being vitamin D deficient because of the decreased ability of their skin and kidneys to synthesize the active form of the vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency can cause bone softening or weakening diseases such as osteomalacia and rickets.

A tarp is a large sheet made of a material such as polyethylene, and is commonly used as a protective covering or shelter in many places. Whether used to cover the ground while painting, to setup temporary tents or to cover and protect material and equipment from weather hazards, water and the sun. There are different types of tarps available in the market, which are different from each other. They have their benefits and disadvantages and are suited to different purposes.

Common types of tarps include poly tarps, vinyl tarps and canvas tarps. Of these, poly tarps are the most commonly used and are the cheapest. But they are also the weakest and least durable. Poly tarps are waterproof, work well in any temperature whether hot or cold and also offer protection from ultraviolet rays.
Vinyl tarps are the strongest and most durable among tarps. They are waterproof and also offer protection from UV rays besides being highly resistant to wear and tear. However vinyl tarps weigh and cost much more than poly tarps and canvas tarps. Vinyl tarps come in two types, these being laminated vinyl tarps and coated vinyl tarps. The former is intended to be used indoors, while the latter is primarily used outdoors.
Canvas tarps lie in between poly tarps and vinyl tarps with regards to price and durability. They are made of cotton and thus environment friendly. They are water resistant, though not water proof because water may seep through a canvas tarp if it is allowed to lie on the tarp for too long. They are also breathable which means that they allow moisture to escape, therefore preventing condensation of water underneath. Canvas tarps also resist rot and mildew.

Hydroponics-The Benefits of Growing Plants Without Soil

Hydroponics, also called soil-less gardening or water gardening, is the growing of plants without need for fertile soil. To grow, plants need air, water, nutrients, minerals and light. Soil is completely optional for a plant to grow if the nutrients and minerals supplied by it can be provided to the plant by other means. Hydroponics involves usage of a nutrient rich water solution to provide the essential nutrients and minerals that plants usually get from soil and a support for the plants to stand upright, generally a substrate such as sand or rock wool.

Almost any plant can be grown using hydroponics. Hydroponics is common method of growing plants in research labs. Hydroponics can also be used to grow plants at home using hydroponics kits, though somewhat expensive. It is especially useful for people who have little space or soil to grow plants in.

Higher yields are possible through hydroponics because more plants can be grown in a limited space compared to soil. Weeds and pests are much less of a problem with hydroponics and various different types of plants can be grown together side by side. Hydroponics has a few disadvantages, these include high cost of equipment and the need for learning and training in the various techniques.

There are few people who don’t love eating salmon, and for good reason. Farmed salmon is a very tasty fish, and moreover there are many health benefits in eating it. Both wild and farm raised salmon contain large amounts of vitamin D that boost body immunity and help protect against many diseases. Farmed salmon also contains Omega-3 fatty acids that are good for the mind and also the heart, because they help in reducing depression and risk of heart attacks. Farmed salmon is also a good source of protein.

Salmon is prepared and eaten in many ways. Canned salmon and smoked salmon are two popular ways of preparing farmed salmon for consumption. Of these, smoked salmon is salmon that has been cured and then subjected to either hot smoking or cold smoking. The difference between hot smoked salmon and cold smoked salmon lies in the temperature at which the fish is smoked. In cold smoking, the emphasis is on curing the fish through prolonged exposure to smoke at lower temperatures ranging from 80 to 90°F. Hot smoking relies on heat more than smoke to cure the salmon and involves higher temperatures of above 165°F. These processes also impart slightly different textures and tastes.

Most of the salmon available in the market nowadays is farm raised salmon, but wild salmon is also available. Farm raised salmon are more affordable and also available year round, unlike the wild varieties. This makes it quite easy for anyone to get their hands and mouths on tasty and healthy farm raised salmon, any day of the year.
